2021-12-25: Sympathizing Saviour

John 1:1-14

On Christmas Day, we’ll return to the text with which we began the advent season and consider from another angle the wonder of what John tells us about ‘the Word become flesh.’ In our times of heartache and trial, it’s profoundly meaningful to lean on someone who has been through the same difficulty and understands exactly how we feel. In taking on our flesh, Jesus became a Saviour upon whom we can lean in exactly this way. God’s response to the problem of evil and suffering isn’t to give us all the answers to our ‘why’ questions…but it is to share in our suffering. In the incarnation, Jesus can say to each one of us, “I know what it’s like to be you.” This Christmas we’ll meditate together again on the depths to which he was willing to go to be our sympathizing saviour.
