It is a youth ministry, that will be part of the Calvinist Cadet Corps, which was founded in 1952 and includes over 600 clubs throughout North America. It is a club where boys and their counsellors work side by side on Bible lessons, Christian service projects, outdoor activities, and merit badge projects — selecting from their wide range of interests and skills. The goal is to help the boys to become more Christ-like in all areas of life, all while growing devotionally, mentally, socially, and physically. If you would like to get more information on Cadeting, please visit: http://www.calvinistcadets.org/.

At Calvin CRC, we have a slate of counsellors ready to serve. Our Cadet club will meet twice monthly on Thursday evenings from 7:00 to 8:30pm. In addition, there will be a variety of other events throughout the year such as Cadet-O-Rama, gym nights, camping, etc. We are offering two levels within the club:

Junior Cadets – Grades 1-3

Recruit-Pathfinder-Builder (R-P-B) – Grades 4-6.

Cadet Ministry Update

1.    Can you describe this ministry to us please?  What is its purpose?
The Calvinist Cadets is a ministry to boys whose purpose is to “Help boys grow more Christlike in all areas of life” and consists of over 600 clubs.  It is designed to help effectively share Christ’s love with boys in both the church and the community. The program has aspects that are similar to the “Boy Scouts” in that it includes badge work and we wear a uniform but differs in that we have a focus on Bible study and growing in Christ.
Our club is targeted toward boys who are in Grades 1 through 8.
2. How often does it meet, and where?

We meet every other Thursday from 7:00-8:30 pm at Calvin CRC plus a number of other special events throughout the season.

3.  What do you do on/during a typical meeting time?

Our meetings include:

  • assembling with the entire club for recitation of our landmarks (these are guideposts for the cadet experience),
  • a uniform inspection,
  • breaking up into small groups (called “cadres”) for Bible study and working on badges,
  • and a time of games or other physical activity.
Our cadet club also belongs to a local regional council. Our council is referred to as the “Golden Triangle” and consists of about 10 clubs that range east to west from Montreal to Renfrew and north to south from Ottawa to Cornwall. Every year we participate in a number of events with these clubs that include a Snow Derby (an outdoor skills competition), the Cadet-O-Rama, attending a 67s game and a ball hockey tournament.
4.  How do you think this ministry fits into the vision of Calvin  “to become more passionate followers of Jesus Christ, used by God to transform lives through confident outreach, wholehearted worship, enfolding fellowship and lifelong discipleship?”
As counsellors we are working as followers of Christ by using our time and talents to help the boys in our program grow physically, mentally, and spiritually.  Being a club we are a fellowship where we can grow together following Christ.
5.  Do you have a story about how this ministry has impacted those who are participating in it?
The Cadet program is rewarding because of its impact on the boys. I have met many adults who have gone through the Cadet program when they were young who still have fond memories of it and their counsellors.  At our club we see the impact on the boys regularly, whether it is a boy learning something new in a Bible study, mastering a knot we have been practicing, hitting a target with a bow and arrow or air rifle, building a rocket or getting a fire going at the Snow Derby, just to mention a few.
6.  How can we assist this ministry and pray for it?
The church already graciously assists us through the budget and Cadet Sunday which we appreciate. Ongoing prayer for the Cadet organization, counsellors, and boys, is appreciated.
