Text: Psalm 71
Synopsis: The writer of Psalm 71 twice mentions that he has old age on his mind (vv. 9, 18), and he recognizes that the final years of one’s life present unique challenges to the life of faith. The psalmist’s prayer indicates his determination not to become bitter, cynical, or just plain passive in his old age but to finish well…to maintain his joy, his peace, and his hope. He understands that persevering in these things at this stage of his life will require a particular resolve to keep walking closely with God. This Sunday, we’ll consider what the Psalmist teaches us about a life-long discipleship, life-long ministry, and life-long hope in Jesus Christ. Old age comes with unique challenges but also unique opportunities for which believers need to be ready. It is for this that Psalm 71 teaches us to pray.
