Hebrews 12:1-3
Part of what makes running such a fitting metaphor for the Christian life is that runners are willing to endure a tremendous amount of pain in order to pursue a joy that makes the suffering worth it to them. In much the same way, Hebrews says this is how Jesus endured the sufferings of the cross. As Jesus writhed in agony we will never understand, he counted it worth the joy of being reunited with his Father in glory (12:2) and having us there with him (2:13). In order for us to persevere in our faith, we too must believe that there’s a joy waiting for us that is worth whatever it may cost us to follow Jesus in this life. We must know what the cross demonstrates most supremely: that God gives beauty for ashes, joy for mourning, and praise for despair.
