Exodus 3:7-15 / Lord’s Day 36 (Q&A 99, 100)
Summary: Quite naturally, the third commandment most easily brings to mind the responsibility we have to never speak about God in ways that are disrespectful or irreverent. But are there other ways, besides our speech, in which we misuse God’s name? As God revealed to Moses in Exodus 3, His name is more than just a word, it is a revelation of who he is. Thus, we misuse God’s name any time we fail to properly acknowledge and revere the greatness of who God is. Put succinctly, the third commandment is about properly honouring everything that God has revealed about himself…not only in speech but in thought and deed as well. The highest and purest way in which we keep the third commandment is by loving, worshipping, and following Jesus Christ, since He is the clearest and most perfect revelation of God.
