Psalm 65
Summary: Entitlement is the enemy of gratitude. The more we think we deserve something, the less likely we are to be thankful we’ve received it. That’s why it’s good for us to listen to the prayers of saints who’ve gone before us and pay attention to what stirs them to gratitude and praise. Psalm 65 is one of many psalms that gives us just such an opportunity. The psalmist’s joy is exuberant precisely because of his insistence on seeing everything as an undeserved gift of God’s goodness. Thanksgiving is a good day for us to examine where a sense of entitlement has squelched our sense of gratitude…and how much joy awaits us in recognizing again the lavish generosity of God.
