Genesis 1:1-2:3
Summary: Genesis 1 depicts God as a master artisan who simply speaks his masterpiece into existence. Taking an earth that is a “formless void” (v.2), God shapes it and fills it to become a place teeming with beauty and with life. At each step of the process, the artist declares his work to be good, good, good and ultimately “very good.” Creation is a place of exquisite and abundant beauty that testifies to the grandeur of its Creator. It is our calling as his creatures to take notice of his handiwork and respond in praise. It is also our great hope as Christians that Christ will come again to restore us and the rest of creation to its intended glory…and God can once again pronounce his joyful benediction: “It is very good.”
