Matthew 26:14-16, 47-56
Summary: Judas’ betrayal of Jesus is considered one of the most underhanded and sinister acts in human history. After all he had seen and heard and even participated in as “one of the twelve,” his act is both deeply sinister and hard to understand. Yet in spite of the injustice, Matthew goes out of his way to communicate the fact that Jesus is not merely a victim of circumstances beyond his control. If Jesus were not compliant in laying down his life, then legions of angels could easily have rescued him from this horrible treachery. No one took Jesus’ life from him; rather it was his own will to do his Father’s will to save you and me by his willing sacrifice.
