Mark 10:17-31
Summary: The rich man looked like such a good candidate to follow Jesus. He was moral, respectful, deferential, and his longing was to have the assurance of salvation. All looked primed for a wonderfully happy encounter with Jesus. Surely he was mere steps away from the Kingdom. But Jesus saw that another god sat on the throne of his heart; namely, his wealth–and Jesus won’t share that throne. And so, as would happen often in Jesus’ ministry and still today, he is rejected by one who is unwilling to treasure Jesus above all else. What’s needed in every conversion is a supernatural act of grace that opens our eyes to see Jesus as supremely worthy of our surrender. Such is the faith he inspired in the disciples, and such is the possibility for all who plea for his supernatural work in their lives.
