John 14:1-7
Advent Series: Advent (which comes from the Latin word for “coming”) is a season for paying particularly close attention to our longing for Christ’s second coming. In order to foster that longing this season, we’ll be looking at some of the remarkable things the Bible tells us about eternal life and some of the intriguing pictures it gives us. The year 2020 has reminded us in a unique way that we are in need of a hope that extends beyond this broken world. This advent we’ll spend some time renewing and relishing in that hope.
Summary: At Christmas time we hear an awful lot about being “home”–amidst the warmth of loved ones–a sense of place where we just simply belong. Yet somehow, even when we’re able to be ‘home for the holidays’ it never seems to measure up to warmth and satisfaction we’re actually trying to find. If Jesus is right that there is an eternal place being prepared just for us in our Father’s house, then maybe our longing for home isn’t merely a longing to visit loved ones or relive the past…but a longing for our truest home in the Father’s house. Scripture repeatedly reminds us that in this life we are pilgrims and exiles. Jesus promises that when he returns and brings us to our place in the Father’s house, we will feel more at home than we’ve ever felt in our entire lives.
