Deuteronomy 8:6-20
Summary: Perhaps you’ve felt a bit odd sitting at a table full of food, next to a kitchen stocked with more than enough to get you through the rest of the week, and asking God for daily bread. As the catechism points out, the deepest purpose of this petition is to help us confess and remember our complete and daily dependence upon God for all that we need. This is what God warns Israel (in Deuteronomy 8) not to forget once they get out of the wilderness and into the abundance of the promised land. The more we have, the greater our temptation to believe we can meet our own needs. And so it may be those of us who feel the oddest saying this prayer who need it the most. Even in our abundance, God wants to instill within us the security of children who know that our Heavenly Father will take care of all that is needful for today, tomorrow and whatever is to come.
