2020-08-30: Thou Changest Not

Exodus 3:1-15

Summary: By the time God appears to Moses in the burning bush, Israel had been in slavery in Egypt for hundreds of years. It’s easy to imagine why many might have concluded that God must have forgotten or changed his mind about the promises he made to their father Abraham. It’s here at the burning bush that God reveals to Moses his name: I Am who I Am (often pronounced in English: Yahweh). God’s name testifies to his unwavering faithfulness and reliability. Among other things, I AM means, “I do not change. I do not abandon. I can always be counted on to be who I am.” This would be Israel’s comfort while in Egypt; this would be their comfort all through their years of rebellion and unfaithfulness; and this is the reason that God’s faithfulness to his people continued all the way to the sacrifice of his own Son Jesus Christ. Our comfort in a world of constant change and decay is that God is I Am—his promises, plan, and character are eternally unwavering.
