1 Samuel 16:1-13
Summary: In verse 6 of our text this week, Samuel does something that’s all too natural for us as human beings; he lets his eyes do his thinking. God famously says in the next verse that though this may be the default inclination of human beings, it’s not how He sees things. The unsuccessful parade of brothers until we get to the anointing of David helps emphasize that God’s criterion for a successful servant defies human inclination. He cares nothing about the superficial attributes we unwittingly value so highly and seeks only one thing: a humble and obedient heart. It’s another way in which David foreshadows his greater Son Jesus Christ whose greatest passion was to do the will of His Father.
