Matthew 6: 25-34
Summary: The spiritual discipline of simplicity is aimed at helping us live the worry-free life that Jesus commands in his famous teaching on the birds and the lilies. Although how we handle our material possessions can raise an enormously complex set of questions (e.g. how much do I keep? how much do I give? what lifestyle is acceptable?), what makes simplicity ‘simple’ is that it involves centering our lives on one single pursuit; namely, striving after the kingdom of God and his righteousness (v.33). When this becomes the driving motivation of our lives, then our relationship to our material possessions falls into its proper place and we are set free from worrying about such concerns.
