Psalm 110
Summary: This Psalm was likely used during the inauguration ceremonies for new Kings. And it makes the rather strange pronouncement that the king (v.1) will also be a priest (v.4). But since kings came from the tribe of Judah and priests from the tribe of Levi, no descendant of David could ever really be both king and priest. That’s what makes this an unmistakable promise of the Messiah, who like Melchizedek (Gen. 14:18ff) was both king and priest. And we need Jesus to be both: a king who can destroy all enemies and a priest who atones for our sins. Ascension is our celebration of the enthronement of our Priest-King in whom we are forever secure.
