Nahum 1
Summary: Nahum may be one of the least popular of the minor prophets for its graphic depictions of God’s wrath toward Nineveh, the capital of Assyria. Apparently the repentance inspired by Jonah was short-lived, and Nahum is tasked with proclaiming a day of wrath and punishment for a city that was known for its insatiable cruelty and violence. Nahum reminds us of how seriously God takes sin and of our constant need for humility and repentance. Yet the good news of Nahum is that God’s wrath includes his commitment to deliver his people against all the powers of evil that seek to harm and destroy us. According to texts like Col. 2:15 and Rev. 19:14-15, this too is a part of the ministry of Christ.
