John 6:35-40

Summary: In these brief verses Jesus peals back the curtains of eternity and lets us consider the
meaning of his ministry from the perspective of heaven itself. Jesus’ frequent references to being ‘sent
by his Father’ and ‘doing his Father’s will’ and his concern for ‘those whom the Father has given him’
point to the fact that the incarnation is the outworking of a plan that he and His Father agreed upon in
the realms of eternity. Theologians have long referred to this eternal agreement as the Covenant of
Redemption. This Sunday we’ll reflect on the incredible assurance these truths provide, and how deeply
they reveal the love of God—who would seal his own fate to guarantee our salvation even before he
created us.
