2018-12-02 – Jesus: Son of God

Matthew 14:22-33

Summary: The great labour and longing of the gospel writers was to present Christ to their readers in such a way that they will see how worthy he is of their faith, and will thus entrust their lives to him. That objective takes center stage in this account of Jesus walking on the water. In addition to the miracles of walking on water and calming the storm, Jesus is identified by two lofty titles: “I am” (“It is I” of v. 27 is literally “I am” – the divine name God revealed in Exodus 3) and “Son of God” (v. 33). While our faith in Christ may, like Peter’s, waffle and waver, the one in whom we place our faith is utterly trustworthy and sufficient. Even Peter’s frantic cry, “Lord, save me!” when directed at the Son of God is faith enough…and our wavering faith is strengthened only as we ponder the greatness of him in whom we trust.
