2016-05-15: Not as Orphans

John 14:15-27

Summary: Jesus’ is speaking to the disciples in light of the fact that he will not be with them much longer before he ascends to heaven. His main point is to comfort and assure them that he is not abandoning them and will come to them through His Holy Spirit in an even better and more profound way. The word Jesus uses for the Holy Spirit is the word “paraclete” which English translations render as advocate (as in the NRSV, v. 16 and 26), counselor, comforter, companion, helper, or friend. This Sunday we’ll meditate on what a marvelous gift we’ve been given through the Holy Spirit—the very presence of Christ himself to live in our midst, to help us, to strengthen us, to be our advocate and friend.
