Amos 5:18-27
Summary: Although Israel was very actively engaged in religious practice in the days of Amos, absent from their daily lives was any real concern for justice or righteousness. The poor in that day were being actively exploited and ignored in court (2:7; 5:10-12) and many in Israel were engaged in immorality and idolatry (2:7-8; 5:26). Their ‘religion’ lacked any real fellowship with God–thus Amos repeatedly entreats them to “seek the LORD” (5:4,6). Revealed through Amos’ preaching is a God who longs to have real fellowship with his people; as well as a God who loves justice and promises to make all things right. These things find their ultimate manifestation in what He’s accomplished through his Son Jesus Christ. As we ‘do justice and love mercy,’ we bear witness to the glorious character of our God.
