2016-10-23: Ascribe to the LORD Glory

Psalm 96

Summary: This is the fourth of a 6-part series on our new Vision Statement. This Sunday morning we’ll focus on the phrase, “…wholehearted worship…” Psalm 96 offers a simple definition of worship in vv 7-8 when it tells us to “ascribe glory to the LORD.” To ascribe glory to something is consider it ‘weighty’ or significance, and it’s something that human beings cannot avoid doing. The problem is that so often we ascribe glory to things that are less glorious than God. This is the essence of idolatry. Psalm 96 reminds us that only God is worthy of worship, and so our task in worship is to focus on the greatness of God so that we turn away from all the other ‘gods’ that compete for our allegiance.
