Psalm 47
Summary: There must have been days in Israel’s history when they found this an awfully difficult song to sing. “Our God is the great King of all the Earth?” Imagine trying to sing those words while sitting in exile by the rivers of Babylon knowing that God’s temple had been leveled to the ground. And there are plenty of things in our lives and in our world today that make this a challenging song to sing. Is God really on the throne? Jesus’ ascension was his coronation as the very king this psalm describes. And as audacious as this psalm may seem to be, the fact is that there remains only one king and kingdom that has endured through all the millenia God’s people have been singing this song. This Ascension Day we will heed the psalmist’s call to worship and join in singing the praises of our eternal King, Jesus Christ.
